What can I expect?
Your initial evaluation will last about 45-60 minutes. I will spend this time talking with you and your child to obtain a thorough history.
After the initial evaluation, follow up appointments will last 15-20 minutes and will be focused on symptoms, response to medication (if medication is initiated), and any concerns that you may have. I will continue to address lifestyle changes that can enhance your treatment.
You will follow up with me within one month of your initial evaluation to discuss your progress. Once a patient has made significant progress, I will see you in the office no less than once every 3 months for ongoing care.
Do I really need therapy?
Yes! Therapists are trained mental health professionals who play an integral part in your treatment. It is important to first begin working with a therapist, prior to seeing a psychiatrist. Therapists can help you, your child, and your family approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication alone cannot solve all issues. Medication, when used appropriately, can be a highly effective treatment modality and is sometimes necessary in conjunction with therapy to achieve adequate symptom control.
